Religious Foolishness

As some of you may know, I live outside Ghana now. I am constantly embarrassed by conventional and social media coverage of ongoings in Africa. I say Africa because to outsiders, all black people are from the "country" of Africa. LOL.

In Africa, everything is religion. Everything is superstition. I have been guilty of this myself, attributing misfortune to "house people." If you know you know. Black cats mean your death is imminent. Maybe a deeper look at the negative connotations that the colour black bears may offer some insight into the unfortunate perception of the cat that has the misfortune to be born with dark fur. It is sad that Nigerians especially thrive on making colourist comparisons with Ghanaians in a bid to somehow make a deeply flawed argument that darker skin is a bad thing.

Why is it that every time there's a tragedy at home, we are quick to immediately say God saved me. What about those who died? You think God washes his face upwards? My religious philosophy is that God made man and gave him a brain. Period. Now to whom much is given, much is required. How are we using our brains? Africa how are we using our brains? Are we living for the now or focusing on the life hereafter? Why can't we make our Africa the paradise that the rest of the world appears to acknowledge it is when they go on safari? Instead of perpetrating the falsehood that crooked charities operating out of Africa push for fund raising photo ops supposedly to "help" starving African kids when the reality is they are using those images to make bank?

I'm tired o. This our disease of reacting instead of acting proactively is exhausting. We need to plan for all possible eventualities instead of giving the "rest to God." He did give us a brain. Our brains are not lesser than the non-black countries currently making great strides. Our current leaders appear to have debilitating brain disease. Those of us common floor members in waiting do not and cannot assume we would do better when its our turn. Regular introspection and targeted reading is the way forward. This is the only way we can start to fix things. History always repeats itself and we are bound to keep making the same mistakes if we don't try to fix them.

We can no longer afford to waste our time in church from dusk to dawn. Perhaps the time has come where self-proclaimed men of God such as our own angel Obinim are relegated to the ranks of accomplished comedians or as KK will say "jokers."
